Love: Love is the foundational ingredient for life and the first core value of the School of Evangelism. Jesus stated that the two most important things to do in life are to love God and love our neighbor. The Bible tells us that without love we have nothing and are nothing. Love is the foundation that all relationships are intended to be built upon. Over the course of the first semester you will come to mind-blowing, experiential realization of how profoundly you are loved by God and how being loved by Him changes everything.

Integrity: Integrity is the ability to make and keep the right commitments, regardless of the personal cost. Integrity is the key characteristic that allows others to trust you. It makes you a whole person, with no gaping flaws in your character. HSE will provide you with abundant opportunity to examine and grow in your personal integrity throughout the semester. If love is the foundation for life, then integrity could be seen as the cornerstone of character. Without it, everything else you build in life will be shaky and unable to withstand the storms of life.

Faith: Faith is stepping outside of the box of your own limitations and grabbing a hold of God’s hand and allowing Him to lead you into a life that is supernatural. The Bible says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” God is pleased when we reach out to Him in faith. At HSE there are numerous opportunities to step out in faith during the international practicum, one week backpacking trip through Catalina Island, weekly outreaches, or simply in embracing the truth of God in the classroom setting. As students study the Bible daily their understanding of how great God is grows dramatically, thus enabling them to take great steps of faith with Him. Faith is like the windows of life that allow us to see outside the four walls of what is possible and begin to see life as God sees it.

Evangelism: Evangelism is simply helping others see how truly good God is. It is the natural outgrowth of a grateful and generous heart. Once you’ve been touched by the love of God, you can’t help but share that love with others – that’s evangelism. Through classroom teaching and practical experience you will learn that the true nature of evangelism is neither intimidating nor intrusive, but loving and inviting. If love is the foundation, integrity the cornerstone, and faith the windows, then evangelism could be seen as the furniture of our lives that make others feel welcome, comfortable, and willing to sit and talk a while about the love of God. You will be given unique opportunities on an international practicum and other ministry challenges to share your faith. Servant-Leadership: Our purpose at HSE is to equip people to become servant leaders – people who have the initiative to take on leadership, with the humble heart attitude of a servant. Jesus told us that even He, “did not come to be served, but to serve.” During your 5 month semester at HSE you will be presented with many opportunities to serve, with the purpose of learning to become more like Christ. Servant-leadership could be seen as the roof that covers the life a vibrant Christian. It is the crowning achievement of a life of love, integrity, faith and evangelism.

Self-Sacrifice –Jesus says that “greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13). Jesus demonstrates the greatest example of love when He sacrifices His life so that those who put their trust in Him would be saved. The pinnacle of love is being willing to sacrifice ourselves for others. In HSE2 you learn what it practically means to sacrifice for God’s purposes in your life and you will be challenged to let your love mature into personal sacrifice for others.

Edification –The greatest expression of a life of integrity is the edification of people around us. Having solid integrity allows others to trust us, rely on us, and be edified by us on a consistent basis. As relationships grow among students returning to HSE2 there is non-stop opportunity to edify classmates in both HSE1 and HSE2. Additionally, in HSE2 you will be challenged to practice edification as you engage in a semester-long internship where your integrity will be put to the test as you proactively seek to edify others.

Responsibility – The Bible says, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:17).” As Christians, we have a responsibility to ensure that our faith actually works. Faith should produce a life of responsible proactive steps toward God and His purpose for their life. In HSE2, you will be entrusted with greater responsibility and provided with greater opportunity to minister. Through internships, mission trips, and outside assignments you will have the opportunity to truly put your faith to the test and show yourself to be faithful.

Vision – Godly vision is seeing things from God’s perspective. When God looks at us He sees people who need His love and forgiveness. A God-given vision will have at its heart the salvation of men’s souls because God desires that all men be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). Vision flows out of a heart of evangelism. In HSE2, you will develop a more intimate understanding of God’s vision for your life and how He wants to use you to change the world. You will be challenged daily to examine your commitment to God’s vision and allow His perspective to shape the course of your life.

Equipping – You’ve probably heard the analogy of the superior value of teaching a hungry man to fish compared to simply giving a fish to eat. This analogy illustrates the principle that the greatest form of servant leadership is equipping others to become all that God desires them to be. Just as Jesus poured Himself into the lives of twelve disciples who in turn had perhaps the greatest impact on the world of any men who ever lived, so you will be challenged in HSE2 to pour yourself into the lives of others so that they can go and be powerfully used by God.
