HSE Level 1

Experiential Learning

Exodus Trip
The Exodus Trip is a physically, spiritually and interpersonally challenging 6-day backpacking trip through Catalina Island. The purpose of this wilderness trip is to take students out of their normal environment in order to experience God in a fresh way, establish loving relationships with their classmates, take new steps of faith, and grow in their servant-leadership. Time spent hiking, swimming in the ocean, cooking at bonfires, and engaging in powerful discussions and teaching makes this a dynamic week for all.

Practicum HSE Practicum
Part of what makes HSE such a unique and powerful discipleship experience is the opportunity toapply the lessons and Biblical principles that are learned throughout the semester. The three week international practicum providesthe HSE1 students with opportunities to put into practice the core values they are studying daily. Through growing in their ability to love others, increasing in their integrity, stepping out in faith daily, engaging in evangelism, and practicing servant-leadership HSE1 practicum equips students for future ministry.

Ministry Outreach Opportunities
Every Friday HSE1 students engage in hands-on ministry. From sharing testimonies or leading worship at drug rehabilitation centers to street witnessing on the San Diego beaches, Friday outreaches expose students to a variety of ministries. Friday outreaches provide excellent opportunity for HSE1 students to more clearly understand their spiritual gifts and calling.

Huddle
During the fall semester, HSE students have the privilege of being an insider at the Horizon Leadership Huddle. They have the exceptional opportunity of interacting with seasoned pastors and missionaries who have been serving the Lord for over 25 years. The Huddle is an inspiring ministry experience and challenges students to grow in their own vision for their lives.

Biblical Training

The Gospel of Mark - Scott Wessell
HSE1 students inductively study the first half of the Gospel of Mark. Inductive Bible Study is a studying technique that enables students to search within the text of Scripture and find exceptional insights and principles. The book of Mark demonstrates how Jesus brought people to believe He was the Christ. At the end of the course, students will be equipped to effectively evangelize and disciple others.

The Book of Romans - Cisco Villasenor
The first half of the Book of Romans is taught inductively and the foundation for the Christian relationship is firmly laid. The Scriptures of Romans reveal to students the significance of God’s salvation, redemption, and acceptance.

Biblical Finances - Scott and Dina Wessell
This Crown Financial course studies through the workbook, The Treasure Principle Workshop and teaches the joy of giving. In a remarkable teaching style, this video workshop inspires students to learn the principles of giving in a way that causes lasting change. Through classroom discussions, verse memorization, and group workshop, students are challenged to examine their own financial perspective and better align it with the word of God.

Bible Overview - Larry Peltier
This dynamic mix of humor and seasoned Biblical perspective lends to a powerful three days of teaching. Students will look at the structure of the Bible as a whole, the nature and origin of each book, its author, and its historical context.

Youth Evangelism - Steve Gonzalez
Steve Gonzalez takes on youth ministry with enthusiasm. Working closely with underprivileged and inner city adolescents, Gonzalez works to bring Christ to this generation. His teaching is packed with creative workshops, personal ministry examples and Biblical study.

Calling - Brooks Gibbs
2 Peter 1:10 teaches, “Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure.” The course teaches students to boldly and confidently seek to know their own God given calling through evaluating their personalities, strengths, spiritual gifts and past experiences.

Principles of Ministry - Mickey Stonier
During this 6 week course, Mickey Stonier shares core ministry principles for those sensing a call to fulfill the Great Commission.  This course is both practical and foundational as students review the Biblical mandates and encouragements to follow in the steps of Jesus Christ.

Evangelism - Jason Stewart
In this evangelism training course the students will be shown many important aspects of evangelism, as well as many personal stories of how Jason has effectively interacted with the lost. The subjects covered within this Evangelism Course are as follows: 1) How to overcome the fear of sharing their faith. 2) The purpose of Lifestyle Evangelism. 3) The goal of our Evangelism efforts. 4) The tools to use when sharing our faith. 5) Doing evangelism the way Jesus did it. 6) How to engage in conversations with the lost. 7) What it takes to fulfill the Great Commission. At the end of this Evangelism training course the student will be equipped with the practical tools she or he will need, in order to effectively share their faith with the world they live in.

Spiritual Gifts
Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 12:1 that we are not to be ignorant of our spiritual gifts. HSE students devote valuable prayer, study and worship time to better understand their spiritual gifts. This class provides a Biblically sound environment for students to use their gifts to edify one another.

Identity - George Clerie
This course enables students to better understand their true identity in Christ. They will have the tools to recognize the negative effects and consequences of having a false identity. Embracing a Biblical identity results in a more dynamic relationship with God, as well as more mature relationships with others.

HSE Level 2

Experiential Learning

Nehemiah Challenge HSE Nehemiah Challenge
The Nehemiah Challenge is a 5-day challenge for HSE2 students to dig deep into the principles of the Book of Nehemiah. HSE2 students will renew their understanding of who God is and how significantly He intends to use their lives and direct their ministries. Drawn intimately into God’s leadership principles through challenging teachings and team-building activities, students reveal a new facet of their own potential to be a servant leader.

Internships
HSE2 students refine their understanding of their gifting and calling while committing to one-on-one internships with the mentor of their choice. The mentor personally disciples each student weekly and provides ministry exposure and significant opportunity for hands on serving. Each student is given 3 weeks at the close of the semester to apply what they’ve learned full-time with their mentor. Students can expect to learn great ministry principles and gain a clearer vision for their own future.

Biblical Training

The Gospel of Mark - Scott Wessell
As students inductively study through the second half of the book of Mark they will complete a Biblical manual on evangelism and discipleship that they will be able to use as resource and guide for the remainder of their lives.

Discipleship Manual - Scott Wessell
This class equips students to use the ministry principles in the book of Mark to create a personal discipleship manual that is tailor-made to fit their own personal call and vision. 

The Book of Romans - Jeff Kuhn
HSE2 students inductively study the second half of Romans. After coming to the conviction of how much God loves them, students are taught how to live out a life of self-sacrifice.

Practical Ministry - George Clerie
This course provides students with indispensable tools useful to launch them into effective ministry. Topics covered include; Biblical roles of a church leader, effective planning and life management, building a missionary support team, writing prayer letters, and missionary taxes and finances. This class is an important component in preparing students for future ministry.

Revelation - George Clerie
By studying Revelation inductively, students derive insights directly from the text and not from man’s interpretation. HSE2 students will walk away with a sense of urgency as to how they ought to live in the end days.

Biblical Finances 2
The Bible is a virtual blueprint for managing your finances and there are more than 2,350 verses that address handling money. This class will provide students with practical tools to get out of debt, manage their money through budgets and savings plans, and become financially free to serve the Lord.

Internship Development Class
The purpose of the Internship Development class is to teach students how to purposefully engage in a mentoring relationship and equip students to lay a foundation for future ministry after graduation.  Each session will provide students with practical tools to be launched into effective ministry such as: net working, effective communication skills, letter and resume writing, life management skills, vision planning, and much more.
